Two South Carolina Credit Unions Join the Self-Help Family

Self-Help Credit Union is delighted to welcome two new credit  unions to our family, both based in South Carolina. Effective on  September 1, Palmetto Trust Federal Credit Union, located in Columbia, joined us. On September 25, we also welcomed CommunityWorks Federal Credit Union, based in Greenville.

Palmetto Trust started in 1953, serving local federal employees in a diverse, growing community. Palmetto Trust serves over 2,200 members out of two locations. It has $16 million in deposits and more than $8 million in loans.

CommunityWorks Federal opened more recently, in 2014, and was chartered to provide financial services to local people of modest means who were unbanked and under-banked. After only four years, the credit union now serves nearly 1,500 members and has made 765 loans totaling over $4 million.

New Video: The Legacy of Burlington Industries' Credit Union

A woman works with threads in her mouth at Burlington Industries, date unknown.

In the late 1970s, when Martha Miller was asked to manage a credit union for Burlington Industries' employees, she said, "What's a credit union?" The Greensboro, NC resident went on to serve as CEO of Choice Federal Credit Union (originally Burlington Employees Federal CU). Ms. Miller is among the people interviewed in this short video history of Choice CU—a credit union that through many changes has maintained a strong family spirit.
